Manchester Health Academy students explore genetics at Nowgen

Year 9 students from the Manchester Health Academy will be visiting Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) to participate in a special workshop at Nowgen, A Centre for Genetics in Healthcare, part of the National Institute for Health Research Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, on Friday May 21.

During the day at CMFT, the students will be learning about genetics in the health service, developing practical skills in molecular genetics, and exploring some of the social and ethical issues associated with genetics and health. The workshop contributes to the vocational learning involved in the Aim Higher Science cohort.

The Manchester Health Academy, formerly Brookway High School, is a new educational academy in Wythenshawe sponsored by Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Co-sponsorship is from Manchester City Council and The Manchester College. The Health Academy has a focus on health, sport and well being.

The students will be at The Nowgen Centre from 10 – 12 noon to participate in a practical workshop in Nowgen’s Teaching Laboratory.

Nowgen works closely with teachers and education professionals to ensure that contemporary genetics is integrated into everyday teaching and learning. This is achieved through delivering hands-on workshops, training teachers, and developing school curriucula.
