Nowgen was established in June 2002 as a Genetics Knowledge Park with a five-year revenue grant from the Departments of Health and Trade & Industry and the Nowgen Partners.
This grant funded the core team and the research and work programmes set out in the original bid. In addition, we have made successful applications for further funding for establishing the European Project Office, the TARGET pharmacogenetics project and a Department of Health-funded service development to establish integrated care pathways for patients with certain genetic conditions.
The Northwest Regional Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund jointly funded the building of the £3.5 million Nowgen Centre, completed in January 2005.
Since November 2007, Nowgen is an independently run organisation, with continued support from its Partner organisations, Central Manchester & Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust (CMMC), Lancaster University, The University of Liverpool and The University of Manchester. Additional external grant funding is supplemented by income from the business support, events, and training courses provided by Nowgen.
