Following from the Valuation & Evaluation project, Nowgen will further enhance expertise in the new and developing areas of Health Economics and Health Services Research. These areas feed into decisions made on the treatment of patients in the NHS, at a time when the NHS is undergoing change. Two new projects are currently ongoing.
“Empowerment: developing a robust instrument to measure patient benefits from clinical genetics services”
Dr Marion McAllister, Genetic Counsellor and Research Fellow at Nowgen, has been awarded an MRC post-doctoral research training fellowship to conduct a 3-year project to develop a new measure of outcome for clinical genetics services.
This project grew from the research recently completed by the Valuation and Evaluation of Clinical Genetics Services research theme at Nowgen. Marion lead on the qualitative arm of this research programme and developed a conceptual model of “Empowerment” describing the patient benefits from using clinical genetics services. It became clear that no single measure of outcome captures all of the patient benefits from using clinical genetics services.
The work reflects both multidisciplinary working within the University of Manchester and internationally with supervision provided by Professor Chris Todd (School of Nursing), Professor Graham Dunn (School of Medicine), and Professor Shoshana Shiloh (University of Tel Aviv). An “Empowerment” questionnaire will be developed to enable the patient benefits from using clinical genetics services to be measured, facilitating the evaluation of different ways of providing clinical genetics services to ensure patient benefits are maximised.
Health Economics Research
In close association with the work at Nowgen, Dr Katherine Payne, Health Economist, will continue to work in Health Economics Research at Manchester (HERMAN) in the Biostatistics, Informatics and Health Economics Research Group. A Research Councils UK Senior Fellowship will allow continuation of research into health economics of different aspects of genetic medicine.
